White Sox Acquire Ivan Nova

Most of White Sox twitter has spent the last day and a half refreshing their feed hoping to see the names Machado or Harper coming to the White Sox.. unless your name is Jon Suarez. Then you’re ALL IN on Michael Brantley. Today, Rick Hahn and co. were busy trying to shore up a starting rotation that was severely lacking depth.

With Michael Kopech’s injury, the departure of James Shields, and hopefully the collective desire to not see much more of Dylan Covey or Carson Fulmer, Rick Hahn stated early in the offseason that the White Sox were going to look outside of the organization for starting pitching help. Most fans hoped the Sox would go after guys like Patrick Corbin or Nathan Eovaldi, but they were off the market fairly quickly. This left just a few names for the White Sox to work with in free agency, sending them in the direction of the trade route. They ultimately acquired Ivan Nova from the the Pirates in exchange for Yordi Rosario and some international cash.

This move provides the White Sox with a league average rotation piece that should be at the very least a solid filler or upgrade from what we saw from James Shields over the past few seasons.

Ivan Nova’s projections for 2019 (via are listed below:

Here is what we saw from James Shields in 2018:

The upgrade here comes in the potential reduction in free passes as long as Nova can maintain his control. Other than that, we can mostly expect to see something similar to what we received from Big Game James last year.

Nova is on the last year of his contract and is owed roughly $9M for the 2019 season. Giving up practically nothing in terms of talent to acquire Nova seems to be a win for the White Sox, who have plenty of payroll felxibility to take on his contract. This acquisition isn’t exactly guaranteeing the White Sox will win more ballgames in 2019, but it is something that needed to be done in order to build more depth in the starting rotation.
