Stan Wins a Trade: Manning to Edmonton

Blackhawks trade Manning to Edmonton

It’s been a while since we’ve talked about Stan Bowman getting the best of another team in a trade. The Teuvo and Danault trades still haunt my dreams. I will give him credit where it’s due though – I think the Schmaltz for Strome/Perlini swap was a good deal for both clubs given the struggles each player went through with their original teams. Today, Stan built on that favorable trade momentum by sending defensemen Brandon Manning and Robin Norell to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for forward Drake Caggiula and defenseman Jason Garrison.

In my opinion, the biggest win in this deal is moving the $2.5 million cap hit of a guy who has regularly been a healthy scratch (Manning). In return, Garrison is just a throw-in to complete the trade. However, Caggiula is an intriguing piece. The Hawks were interested in him when he was a free agent out of college, but he ultimately signed with Edmonton. The 24-year old winger has posted 27 goals and 22 assists in his 156-game NHL career. Although his defense lacks, he has shown bursts of dynamic offensive ability.

Although the Hawks aren’t completely clearing Manning’s $2.5 cap hit, Caggiula is signed for $1.5 million through 2019-20 and he won’t just be watching from the press box! Overall, this trade is a good move for the Blackhawks. I honestly didn’t believe any team would be willing to take Manning, especially the Edmonton Oilers. He and Connor McDavid have a bit of… history (see below).

Good luck with that, Edmonton.
