The Blackhawks and Bruins face off at Notre Dame Stadium today in the 2019 Winter Classic. This contest will be the Hawks’ fourth Winter Classic and sixth outdoor game. The Bruins have played on the New Year’s Day big stage two previous times. Puck drop is scheduled for 12 PM central time.

Three Things

  • Head coach Jeremy Colliton announced yesterday that Cam Ward will be starting in net for the Blackhawks. Collin Delia is certainly the hot hand right now, but you have to assume that some sort of “veteran’s priority” went into the decision to start Ward instead.
  • The Blackhawks won five of their last six games to close out 2018. Fast starts have been a major component of their recent success. The Hawks have scored first in seven of their past nine games. They look to continue that success and fire up the massive crowd early in the game.
  • Yesterday, Patrick Kane was named the NHL’s First Star of the Week. He has been on a tear as of late so it didn’t come as a surprise to anyone. It will be fun to see what he can do on the big stage today.
