Ahead of Wednesday’s matchup with the Marlins, NBC Sports Chicago’s David Kaplan reported that Addison Russell is in Chicago and not with the Iowa Cubs.
It is believed that the young middle infielder will be called up ahead of possible injured list stints for both Ben Zobrist and David Descalso.
Just a week ago, Russell was reinstated from his suspension and sent to Triple-A Iowa for live game action. Now, there is a good chance the polarizing decision to bring Russell back to the active roster is all but certain.
If Russell is indeed activated ahead of Wednesday’s game, it’s doubtful we see him play tonight. Expect David Bote to play second base against the Marlins with Kris Bryant manning third. However, there is a possibility that Russell starts at second base, or shortstop if Javier Baez needs a maintenance day, for Thursday’s series finale against Miami.
It will certainly be “must-watch TV” when Russell inevitably takes his first at-bat of the season at Wrigley Field. Don’t be surprised for a mix of happy cheers and bellowing boos when Russell officially returns to Wrigley.
UPDATE – 3:08 PM
