Manny Bañuelos is Headed to the IL While The White Sox Rotation Continues to Spiral Downward
With another hit to the starting rotation, how will the White Sox find a way to replace these innings?
As if the White Sox starting rotation hasn’t suffered enough lately, it took another big blow on Friday with the news of Manny Bañuelos heading to the 10-day injured list. The starting rotation has been a weakness outside of Lucas Giolito and flashes from Reynaldo Lopez, with Carlos Rodon undergoing Tommy John surgery and the Ervin Santana experiment being short-lived while not providing favorable results.
There was hope that the injury he suffered during Tuesday’s loss to the Indians wouldn’t require time on the IL, but this appears to not be the case.
Recalling Jose Ruiz to replace Bañuelos is interesting as he doesn’t figure to take over the hole in the starting rotation. Right now, the four starters in the rotation are Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, Ivan Nova, and last night’s winner Dylan Covey.
Now the question is, how will these innings be filled? Ross Detwiller had a big ten-strikeout performance in his AAA debut after recently signing a minor league deal. Does he get the call? Justin Nicolino also recently signed a minor league deal and is a lefty, so that could be a possibility. Jordan Guerrero, Donn Roach, and Jordan Stephens seemed to be options entering the 2019 campaign, but have both struggled mightily so far in AAA this season. Do the White Sox take a play out of the Rays playbook and try an opener?
The only other options remaining are much preferable to the aforementioned ones and would answer the outcry from White Sox fans regarding this issue. Option A would be to call up Dylan Cease, who has a 2-1 record to go along with a 3.54 ERA in six AAA starts this season. Option B would be to go outside of the organization yet again for some help, but maybe this time call the lovely Scott Boras and see what his client Dallas Keuchel thinks about Chicago.
So what will it be, White Sox? We’ve been surprised before and I definitely think we could be surprised yet again.
