White Sox Roster Moves Heading Into Saturday: Vieira to AAA, Zavala Called Up In Place of Castillo
The White Sox made some roster moves heading into Saturday’s game, with the most notable being calling up Seby Zavala from AAA in place of the injured Welington Castillo.
After building some momentum in the final two games of the Houston series, the White Sox took a beating in a 11-4 loss on Friday night. At first, it looked as if the offensive fire power was here to stay, as the Sox put up four runs in the second inning off of the young Jose Berrios. This didn’t last, however, as those were the only four runs the offense could get across and Reynaldo Lopez couldn’t hold down the solid Twins offense.
Heading into Saturday’s game, the Sox made some roster moves.
The first move that was made was optioning Thyago Vieira back down to AAA Charlotte. He has been up and down all season, and this move makes sense as Manny Bañuelos figures to be activated from the IL to start today’s game. With a few options remaining on his contract, this left Thyago as the odd man out.
The second and more noteworthy move is that the White Sox called up catcher Seby Zavala and moved Welington Castillo to the injured list. I first want to start by saying that I hope that Castillo has a smooth recovery. Injuries suck. However, I’m excited for someone else to get a shot to catch along side James McCann as Castillo has not been productive at all since he’s been on the White Sox. Zavala’s AAA numbers are actually pretty bad this season, but in 2018 across two levels he hit .257/.316/.417 with 13 home runs and 51 RBIs. Still not great numbers, but at this point we know what we have with Castillo and its about time to see what else we have within the system.
Hop on the Seby Zavala train now while there’s still room!
