During warmups of today’s afternoon game against the Colorado Rockies, Steve Cishek, one of the most valuable arms in the Cubs’ bullpen this season, was carted off the field. Cishek was playing catch in the outfield with Brandon Kintzler and was hit hard with a baseball in the inside of his right knee.
While he dropped to the grass immediately after being hit and was in considerable pain, the initial reaction of the Cubs is that it is only a bad bruise and nothing more serious than that.
If Cishek does miss considerable time as a result of this, its a big blow to the bullpen. Cishek has been the best bullpen arm for the Cubs this season, accumulating six saves and a 3.21 ERA (sports-reference.com). More impressively, Cishek led all relievers in baseball in soft hit percentage as of two days ago, per Bleacher Nation:
Even with the impending addition of Craig Kimbrel, Cishek is a major piece moving forward down the stretch of the divisional race and hopefully the postseason. He will likely be the seventh inning high-leverage reliever, and his health is of extreme importance if the Cubs want to win the NL Central.
