Blackhawks Acquire Defenseman From Pittsburgh

Stan Bowman has opted for a trade to start restructuring the Blackhawks blue line.

Per Darren Dreger of TSN, the Blackhawks have acquired defenseman Olli Maatta from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for forward Dominik Kahun and a fifth-round draft pick.

The 24-year-old defenseman already has two Stanley Cups under his belt, as he was part of the Penguins back-to-back championship teams in 2016 and 2017. Maatta has posted 25 goals and 82 assists in 362 games over his six-year NHL career. In addition, he sports a career 50.2% Corsi-For. With a slim market of affordable free agent defensemen this offseason, Stan Bowman has elected to take the trade route as the first step of restructuring the Chicago blue line.

The Hawks will be parting ways with Dominik Kahun after just one season in which he posted 13 goals and 24 assists over 82 games. Kahun will likely be replaced by Dominik Kubalik since he was signed by the Blackhawks after an impressive showing at the IIHF World Championships.
