The Chicago Bears signed a big fan favorite after the draft in Utah State’s Dax Raymond. He was another rookie the Bears were able to grab that piqued the interest of several teams. The Bears are in need of some additional depth at tight end due to a few players with injury history and lack of production.
In his freshman season, it was more an introduction year for him. The numbers didn’t jump off the page as he only recorded four catches for 72 yards in just five games. In his true sophomore season of 2016, a back injury kept him out all year. However, he was able to overcome that injury to make a huge return in 2017 for his “sophomore season.”
His redshirt sophomore season ended up becoming Raymond’s best. He racked up 41 receptions, 456 yards, and one touchdown in 12 games. An encouraging stat from that stretch is an average of over ten yards per catch. He looks like he could be a nice target with reliable hands. In his junior season, he was able to continue with some solid numbers again. In ten total games, he logged 345 yards on 27 catches. In addition, he found the back of the endzone twice that season. His career numbers are not eye-popping but he has shown improvement every year.
A key reason for a player like him falling in the draft is a history with some injuries. He will be coming in as a 24-year-old rookie due to those injuries and a two-year church mission between high school and college. That type of thing could really help him fit in with the family atmosphere this team has. It could help him feel more comfortable so he can focus on getting improving with the team.
Another tidbit you might hear about come training camp and preseason is the prior years of playing basketball. Plenty of tight ends have a history of that from high school or college, so it could be an advantage for him in the route-running and vertical aspects of the position. Can Raymond find a spot on this roster? Let the position battles start!
