Position Battles: Wide Receivers

Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy are trying to ramp up the competition on the offensive side of the ball in a big way this season after bolstering the receiver position through the draft and free agency.

The Chicago Bears are weeks away from starting training camp, where we will see position battles all over the roster. The most intriguing one will take place at wideout. Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy are trying to ramp up the competition on the offensive side of the ball in a big way this season after bolstering this group through the draft and free agency.

The returning players from 2018 are Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, Anthony Miller, Javon Wims, and Tanner Gentry. Another name that was with the team last season but is now playing another position is Taquan Mizzell Sr., as he was a former running back.

In free agency, the Bears added a few more receivers to the room. Bringing in more competition naturally makes everyone compete at a higher level. Cordarrelle Patterson and Marvin Hall will bring more to this team. Patterson can do a little of everything on the field. Hall has the speed to make an impact in one-on-one situations, as well in the special teams area. They also signed Jordan Williams-Lambert to a reserve/future contract in January.

Going into the NFL draft, it did not seem as if the Bears really needed any more wide receivers. Well, that was not the case. They selected Riley Ridley in the fourth round. They also supplemented the depth of the receiving corps with UDFA’s Emanuel Hall and Thomas Ives after the draft. Ridley was rumored to be the best route runner in this draft class. Hall was the biggest target for undrafted players. The only thing holding him back was some injury history, but he still brings plenty of talent to the table.

The competition will be tough this season, to say the least. Everyone will have to bring their A-game every single time they are out on the field. It should make this group better than they have been in the past. It will be interesting to see who the team ends up keeping on the roster when the regular season rolls around. This is the most important and interesting battle for the team. Having all this talent and potential out wide will make Mitch Trubisky a very happy quarterback. Let the battles begin!
