Blackhawks Trade Hayden, Pick Up a Center and Draft a Defenseman

The Hawks shipped Hayden to New Jersey for a center and drafted a blue liner in the secound round.

On day two of the NHL Draft, trades have been abundant. The biggest move of the day took place before the second round picks got underway when the Nashville Predators sent P.K. Subban to the New Jersey Devils for Steven Santini, Jeremy Davies, and a pair of second-round picks. The Blackhawks got in on the trade action, albeit not as drastic, when it came time to announce the 43rd overall pick.

John Hayden, who was consistently a healthy scratch during his time with the Hawks, was sent to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for center John Quenneville. If you followed the team closely over the past two seasons, it comes as no surprise that Hayden was shopped.

As for Quenneville, yes, he is related to former head coach Joel; he’s a first cousin once-removed. He even made his NHL debut in Chicago against the Blackhawks back in 2016. The 23-year-old center has split time between New Jersey and AHL affiliates Albany and Binghamton over the past three seasons. Here’s a look at his career stats from juniors to the show:

As for the 43rd overall pick, the Blackhawks went the defensive route by selecting 18-year-old Alex Vlasic from the United States Development Program. Like Quenneville, Vlasic also has hockey in his blood as he is cousins with San Jose Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic. Here is a look at the stats Alex has compiled over his career:

The 6-foot-6, 198 lb defenseman carries a left-handed shot and resides in Chicago suburb, Wilmette. He’s committed to Boston University, a Hockey East Conference heavyweight. Vlasic plays with a defense-first mentality, but he’s still raw and has plenty of room to develop an offensive game.

It will be interesting to track his development during the upcoming season. Take a look at the newest Blackhawk in action with the video below.
