Once Upon a Yesterday: It’s 06/26 and the Cubs Are Due
Time for a new outcome on 06/26 against the Braves, or whoever they called themselves!
Alright dudes and dudettes, it’s time for another edition of OUY. Today, 06/26/2019, the Cubs square off against the Atlanta Braves. Historically, the Cubs franchise hasn’t had their best when facing the Braves franchise on this day.
1903. Chicago Cubs 4- Boston Beaneaters 5. Nine years before they adopted the name Boston Braves, the Beaneaters beat the Cubbies at home.
1931. Chicago Cubs 3 – Boston Braves 7. 18 months into the Great Depression, and the Cubs didn’t help improve morale. While the score in the game was very close, the battle of the lineup cards was. I have to give the win to Boston all the same, with 2B Rabbit Maranville and P Socks Seibold narrowly beating out Cubs LF Riggs Stephenson and PH Footsie Blair for best names.
1942. Chicago Cubs 6 – Boston Braves 4. The entire world was at war and finally, the Cubs broke through. Their first win against the Braves on this date was courtesy of a 9th inning, 2-run, go-ahead HR by HOFer Jimmie Foxx. It was in the twilight of his career, and it was his 20th game with the Cubs since being claimed from the Boston Red Sox. This game’s 2B had a legendary name battle, the Cubs had Rip Russell and the Braves had Sibby Sisti and eventually Skippy Roberge. We’re gonna give this one to the Cubs as well.
1946. Chicago Cubs 2 – Boston Braves 11. The Great War is over, and so is the Cubs winning streak against the Braves. The Cubs got thrashed, despite the fact that their CF was Peanuts Lowrey. The only positive, and this is mining pretty deep for a positive, is that Cubs RP Hi Bithorn retired the only batter he faced.
1959. Chicago Cubs 1- Milwaukee Braves 11. A different city, a similar outcome. Cubs ran into a legit buzzsaw. This Braves team had HOFers Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews in their lineup. Naturally, the only HR of the game was hit by Braves pitcher and HOFer Warren Spahn.
All in all, the Cubs are 1-4 against the Braves, and have been outscored 38-16. In the Cubs favor, today is the first time on 06/26 they’ve faced the Braves as the Atlanta Braves, and the first time they’ve faced them at home. Like I said, they’re due. Go get em, Yu!
