Kimbrel On His Way, Alzolay to Stay (For Today)

As the highly anticipated closer makes his way onto the roster, the rookie will stay on the North Side for the time being.

It was confirmed today that the Chicago Cubs have called up mid-season free agent and seven-time All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel to join the major league team ahead of tonight’s series finale against the Atlanta Braves. In the corresponding move, the Cubs are optioning Tony Barnette to AAA.

Is that Craig Kimbrel, or Brooksy?

That means that, for the moment, Adbert Alzolay will remain with the big league club. Injured pitchers Kyle Hendricks and Carl Edwards Jr. have both thrown recent bullpen sessions. I anticipate Alzolay stays with the MLB squad until one of the two is ready to return.

So excited to stay with the big league team!

Fun facts of the afternoon: both Craig Kimbrel and Jason Heyward made their MLB debuts for the Atlanta Braves in 2010, and I like titles that rhyme.
