UFC 239 Preview Part II

The most exciting fight is a championship bout but it’s not the headliner.

We’re only a day away from the fight card of the year and I’m extremely pumped for it! In part I of my UFC 239 preview, I discussed the legendary Jon Jones championship bout, however I’m much more excited for the other title fight tomorrow night. For the Women’s Bantamweight Championship belt, current champion Amanda Nunes (17-4) will defend the title against the furious kickboxer Holly Holm (12-4).

Let’s wind the clocks back several years. Ronda Rousey was taking the MMA world by storm. In her first three fights, she had three wins by submission. All three were by armbar and all three were in less than a minute. It was an extremely impressive start to a fantastic MMA career. I was a huge fan of Ronda! She continued her streak to a record of 8-0, all of which came by armbar submission! She went to 12-0 in her professional career before suffering her first loss and it was quite a shocking event in November 2015.

Holly Holm completely took over the fight, escaping Ronda’s reach and landing strike after strike on Ronda. She even managed to take Ronda down to the ground, using her own game against her. It was a very impressive first round for Holly. Then in the second round, one of the most famous knockouts happened. A quick strike to the head and then a huge kick to the neck/head and Ronda was out. There was a new women’s champion that day.

Fast forward to December 2016 and Ronda’s first match in the UFC since being knocked out by Holly. She only lasted 48 seconds in this fight and she didn’t stand a chance. She was beaten, battered, and thrashed from the very start. She got rocked over and over by a fury of rock solid punches. In the end, she took four straight fists to the face that backed her against the cage before going limp and referee Herb Dean saved her from certain death. This destruction came from none other than the amazing Amanda Nunes!

Ronda hasn’t returned to MMA since. Her final two professional fights were KO/TKO losses from both Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes. The reason I recap these Rousey fights is to show the magnitude of striking power that is about to go down tomorrow night. This will be a bloodbath of power.

Amanda Nunes is the first woman to become a dual champion in the UFC. She currently holds the Bantamweight and Featherweight belts. I’ve become such a huge fan of her. In interviews she is one of the sweetest people you’ll ever hear speak but the second she’s in the octagon, she becomes a total animal. Look what she did to Cyborg:

I’ve said before that she could easily be in the men’s divisions. She hits so incredibly hard you can feel it come through the TV. It will never happen though and I’m 100% positive that all the men in the Flyweight and Bantamweight divisions are extremely grateful that they don’t have to match up against Nunes. Check it out yourself below:

UFC 239 is tomorrow night on ESPN + PPV. Get ready folks, we’re in for one hell of a treat tomorrow. I’m expecting this to be an epic shootout and will go the full five rounds. Holly will evade Amanda with her amazing cardio but if Amanda gets in close, she can land that power cross to get the knockout. I can’t predict who will win this fight because I feel like it’s such a great matchup. I want to see Amanda come out on top but I can easily see either of them taking it.
