The Cubs bats helped win this one for Jon Lester early on with explosive offensive numbers in the first.
The Cubs were hoping to keep the momentum on their side after winning yesterdays game. The Cubs’ chances always look good when their ace, Jon Lester, takes the mound. Jon is pitching well this season posting a 3.72 ERA and a 8-6 record. On the Pirates side, Jordan Lyles (5-5, 4.36 ERA) took the mound hoping to turn his season around after struggling lately.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Cubs exploded on the Pirates starter Lyles. The Cubs scored a whopping seven runs on five hits including a Willson Contreras three-run homer.
Lyles walked Kyle Schwarber and Kris Bryant and both walks came back around to bite him. After giving up the three-run home run, he stopped being aggressive with his fastball and struggled to get batters out. The Cubs ended up batting around in the bottom of the first. Lester got in on the first inning fun as well with a two-run RBI single.
In the bottom of the third, Jon Lester added on to his offensive performance by hitting a solo home run in to the left field bleachers making it 8-0 Cubs.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Cubs tacked on two more runs with a single to left field by Addison Russell, making it 10-0. Russell ended up on third base because of a throwing error to home plate.
In the top of the fifth, the Pirates got on the board thanks to a moonshot home run to left field by Jung Ho Kang, making it 10-1 Cubs.
In the top of the sixth, Starling Marte hit his 15th home run of the year took make it 10-2.
In the top of the seventh, with runners on the corners for the Pirates and one out, Corey Dickerson grounded into a RBI force out giving the Pirates their third run of the game.
In the top of the eighth, Starling Marte got a hold of a Randy Rosario fastball and deposited it into the left field bleachers making it 10-4, and adding some intrigue to the score.
With the game being 10-4 and a non-save opportunity, the Cubs had Steve Cishek come in with one out in the ninth to shut the door. Steve Cishek got a ground ball up the middle and Baez and Russell combine to turn a great double play to end this one. Fly the W!!!
