Contreras to IL, Cubs Acquire Replacement Catcher

The Cubs added a catcher to fill the void while Contreras is sidelined.

Upon the conclusion of tonight’s 6-3 loss to the Reds, the Cubs acquired catcher Martin Maldonado from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for Mike Montgomery.

This trade was most likely prompted by Willson Contreras heading to the injured list with a foot injury.

Given how close the NL Central race has been all season, the Cubs don’t want to lose any ground after giving themselves a small cushion with a sweep of the Pirates over this past weekend. Maldonado has accumulated a 1.1 bWAR over the course of 73 games with the Royals so far this season.
