After Monday night’s 5-2 loss to the Royals, Zack Collins was optioned to AAA Charlotte. Collins got the call to take the place of an injured Wellington Castillo in mid-June. As speculated, Collins is indeed the odd man out as Welington Castillo will likely rejoin the big league club on Tuesday after completing his rehab stint with the Charlotte Knights.
There is much debate amongst Sox faithful as to whether Collins got a fair shake in his first big league stint, as he only appeared in nine games and accumulated 31 plate appearances. He did not make much of the 31 trips as he only had two hits, one of which was a three-run home run against the Rangers.
Collins, a former first-round draft pick, will undoubtedly get another shot in the big leagues when rosters expand this September and will likely be competing for a spot on the team next year out of Spring Training.
It sounds like Collins enjoyed his time here, so hopefully his next stint is more successful than the first.
