Blackhawks Trade Artem Anisimov to Ottawa for Zack Smith

The Blackhawks open up a little bit of cap space with this trade.

The Blackhawks announced a trade with the Ottawa Senators this afternoon when the two teams swapped forwards.

Trade talk has surrounded Artem Anisimov for a while because of his $4.5 million cap hit that runs through 2021-22. His modified no-trade clause expired on July 1st, so the Hawks just recently gained more flexibility to move him. However, the Blackhawks did pay a $2 million signing bonus to Anisimov yesterday before trading him today.

Anisimov accumulated 77 goals, 78 assists, and a 49.6% Corsi-for in 291 games over four seasons for the Blackhawks. In return, Zack Smith is coming to Chicago. Smith posted 9 goals and 19 assists in 70 games for the Senators last season. Over his 11-year NHL career in Ottawa, he has recorded 94 goals, 99 assists, and a 49.1% Corsi-for in 612 games. In terms of salary, the 31-year-old forward carries a $3.25 million cap hit through 2020-21.
