Charlie Tilson is Heading Back to Charlotte, Who Will Take His Place?
Who will replace Tilson on the White Sox roster?
After yet another loss on Thursday, the White Sox optioned outfielder Charlie Tilson to AAA Charlotte. Tilson appeared in 54 games for the Sox this year and hit a mediocre .229 in 157 plate appearances, accumulating a -0.8 bWAR.
Something absolutely had to give after the Sox suffered back to back sweeps at the hands of Oakland and Kansas City, and Tilson will not be joining his teammates in Tampa Bay this weekend.
Who will take the roster spot of Tilson is the ultimate question.
Will Daniel Palka be returning to the bigs? Highly doubtful. If Charlie Tilson got the hook for his performance, Palka’s showing at the big league level would not warrant another call up at this point. With the addition of AJ Reed, Palka would also be a redundant piece.
Adam Engel‘s name also comes up in this conversation. Engel, who was sent down to Charlotte after appearing in 26 games to start the season, has hit .270/.347/.464 with nine home runs in his time in AAA. A slight improvement over what he posted in the big leagues may have earned him another shot. However, Engel amassed 857 plate appearances over the last three years and left with a career .207 average. Is now the time to give him more?
While Luis Robert has been absolutely tearing up AAA pitching (he hit two more home runs tonight), his call up is highly unlikely because he’s only been in Charlotte for seven games and White Sox fans aren’t allowed to have nice things.
A dark horse could be the return of Tim Anderson. While manager Ricky Renteria stated the shortstop would need a rehab stint, Timmy has been taking infield.
There was also a little twitter exchange that hints towards a possible Tim Anderson this weekend…
For those that don’t know @tha_chapster on Twitter, that’s Tim Anderson’s manager. Could the friend he’s heading to Tampa with be Timmy? Guess we will have to wait and find out.
