Training Camp: Day One Recap
What a first day of camp for the kings of the NFC North.
What a first day of camp for the kings of the NFC North. The Bears returned to Bourbonnais this week for training camp, and today was the first practice open to the public. The organization does several things so well at this event. First off, they have multiple entrances to help people get in quicker and tons of parking. The amount of activities they have for families is amazing. It can really be a fun day out for a family. Also, they have a Bears Pro Shop there with tons of awesome merchandise. A little of everything for people of all ages. Finally, the biggest thing tons of fans saw was chairman George McCaskey welcoming fans to camp at an entrance all while signing autographs as well. Amazing work to start the event.
At the beginning of the practices there is a lot of work done with each individual position. The fun really starts when they do the full team scrimmages. Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy run camp in a perfect way, it seams as if the starters, second team, and third team squads get the same amount of work. This will help stay away from some players getting too much work and ultimately help avoid injury. We all know the Bears were surprisingly healthy in 2018. The one drill that was the most fun to watch was the one-on-one’s. The first matchup had Mitchell Trubisky in at QB, with Allen Robinson going up against Kyle Fuller. The battle was very fun to watch, Robinson won the battle in the end which forced the defense to do a few burpees.
As the scrimmages continued, the kickers finally came out to attempt some field goals. The route the Bears are going for this position is bit interesting. They give one of the two kickers the full practice to be on the field attempting the kicks. Todays kicker was Elliott Fry, who ended up missing his first kick from 33 yards, but returned to hit nine in a row. Fry ended the day telling the coaches “I want the 60-yarder”. He went out and nailed that kick ending the day 9/10.
During, the scrimmages, there where tons of great plays made by players on both sides of the ball. Mitch Trubisky looked more comfortable and smooth in his motions due the practice. Khalil Mack was absolutely unstoppable as always, which will just make this offensive line work harder and get better. Bradley Sowell looked built to play at the tight end position his season which was a big surprise. Tons of positives came away from the first practice. There was one final one-on-one, which was Taylor Gabriel vs Prince Amukamara with Mitch as the QB. Unfortunately, this one didn’t end well for either side, the play was ultimately missed opportunity for all involved so all had to pay for that in the form of more burpees.
Practice came to a close with a lot of happy fans. Next up for fans at this point is to try to get some autographs and talk to these players for a little while. This team makes it a major point that all fans leave happy with meeting players and getting their autographs. A very successful day for the fans, players and this organization. It was also reported that a total of 8,385 fans were in attendance.
What will be in store for all the fans on day two? Who was the MVP of day one in your eyes? Comment below and thanks for reading!
