BREAKING: Cubs Deal Maldonado to Astros, Acquire Kemp
In a series of… strange events, the Cubs have traded catcher Martin Maldonado to the Houston Astros for super-utility outfielder Tony Kemp.
Maldonado rejoins the Astros, who he spent time with in 2018. The Astros were rumored to be in the market for catchers, and now that the Cubs have two healthy catchers, Maldonado was not needed anymore. However, there was speculation that Caratini was being discussed as a trade piece at the time of the Maldonado trade, so that would explain the desire to dump him now that Caratini appears to be staying put.
Tony Kemp is a nice piece in return for Maldonado. He can play all outfield spots and brings speed to the Cubs roster. He could prove to be a valuable piece down the stretch here for the Cubs. Having adequate depth for a playoff run is a necessity for contending teams. Kemp was DFA’d by the Astros just a few days ago.
There is a chance the Cubs make another move, so stay tuned for any developments ahead of the 3:00 PM deadline.
