News broke on Monday that the Chicago Cubs called Duane Underwood up to the MLB roster from Triple-A Iowa.
As noted by Jesse Rogers, it sounds like there has not been a corresponding move yet. However, speculation suggests a relief pitcher is heading to the IL.
In other news, after being removed from Saturday’s win over the Brewers, Willson Contreras was placed on the IL with a strained hamstring. Today, it was confirmed that Contreras will miss four weeks with the injury.
The injury to Contreras is a big blow to the Cubs’ catching depth. The Cubs had an insurance plan in place with Martin Maldonado but elected to trade him for Tony Kemp. In hindsight, that move may come back to hurt the Cubs through the month of August and into early September.
UPDATE: Craig Kimbrel is heading to the IL. This is the corresponding move for Duane Underwood. An official summary was provided by Tony Andracki:
