Kimbrel’s Return Imminent
It’s not official yet, but Craig Kimbrel is likely to return from the IL tomorrow.
While still not yet official, it appears that Cubs closer Craig Kimbrel is nearing the completion of his assignment as an undercover cop in a kindergarten classroom and is poised to return to the Cubs bullpen, as soon as Sunday, August 18th.
Theoretically, the Cubs brass may elect to send Kimbrel for a couple of games in the minors, but given the gravitas of the recent implosions at the end of ball games, I don’t think that happens. As Billy Shakespeare put it, a closer off the IL by any other name would still smell as sweet. Between Kimbrel, Steve Cishek and Brandon Morrow, the Cubs have 514 career saves sitting on the shelf – more than 2019 HOFer and Chicago Cub Lee Smith had in his career, and he’s third all-time! With the sting of Bryce Harper and the Pittsburgh headhunters still fresh, the cavalry couldn’t get here soon enough.
UPDATE: Kimbrel has officially been activated ahead of tonight’s Little League Classic against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
