During an interview on ESPN 1000, Anthony Rizzo told David Kaplan that he likely will not be in the lineup when the Chicago Cubs take the field tonight against the New York Mets.
Rizzo, who has been dealing with a stiff back all weekend that held him out of Sunday’s 7-5 loss to the Washington Nationals, is set to miss more time when the Cubs need him the most. With the Cubs now three games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central and the Brewers only 2.5 behind the Cubs, this news could not have come at a worse time.
The Cubs will need to play better than they did while being swept at the Friendly Confines this weekend in order to beat a Mets team that is also fighting for their playoff lives. New York will send right-handed hurler Marcus Stroman (7-11, 3.18 ERA) to the mound against Yu Darvish (4-6, 4.43 ERA) in the series opener.
