Lucas Giolito was one of the worst starting pitchers in the league in 2018. He posted a 6.13 ERA, 5.46 FIP, .350 xwOBA, but completely revolutionized his spin rate and velocity in the offseason. He reached out to his high school coaches and focused on preparation for the season, and boy, did it work!
Unfortunately, Giolito has a mild lat strain and will not make any starts for the rest of the season.
He is the best pitcher on the team, and he has established himself as a clear ace for the future. He doubled his strikeout rate in 2019 and posted a 5.1 fWAR and a 3.41 ERA. He’s a new pitcher, and I’m damn proud to have this guy in a Sox uniform. We look forward to Gio continuing his dominance in 2020, and the front office will hopefully supplement him with similar talent in the rotation.
