After tonight’s 6-0 preseason loss to the Capitals, the Blackhawks announced that defenseman Adam Boqvist and forward Aleksi Saarela have been assigned to the AHL Rockford IceHogs.

Boqvist saw a heavy share of action during the preseason, but the coaching staff decided that he still needed some more seasoning with the team’s AHL affiliate before skating in the show. While disappointing for fans that were excited to see his electrifying offensive ability on display at the United Center, this move isn’t all that surprising given the sheer number of defensemen vying for roster spots. There is no doubt he will be up in Chicago this season, it just won’t be to begin the year.

Perhaps this means that Calvin de Haan, who has been practicing with the team but hasn’t skated in a preseason contest due to a slight groin injury, will be good to go for the regular season.
