Last week, the White Sox parted ways with hitting coach Todd Steverson and assistant hitting coach Greg Sparks. Yesterday, they named AAA Charlotte’s hitting coach Frank Menechino as Steverson’s replacement. Menechino was formally the Miami Marlins’ head hitting coach in 2014 and 2015. He also served as the Marlins’ assistant hitting coach from 2016 to 2018 before being let go after the 2018 season. The White Sox hired him as Charlotte’s hitting coach for the 2019 season last January.

In 2017, Menechino was tasked with helping superstar Giancarlo Stanton reach his potential, as Stanton went on to win the NL MVP.

This hire feels like the right move. Menechino is going to be a familiar face to work with for White Sox hitters come spring. He worked with several top prospects in AAA Charlotte, along with big-league talent last September in Chicago. There were some great improvements for Tim Anderson, Yoan Moncada, and even Eloy Jimenez after an injury-filled first half. Menechino can come in and help continue their success while helping the likes of Luis Robert, Zack Collins, and Nick Madrigal adjust to life in the big leagues.

General manager Rick Hahn needs to help Menechino by supplementing the young talent through trades and/or free agents this offseason, or else it won’t matter who the hitting coach is. Nonetheless, a new face was needed in the position, and it will fall on the players to get the job done in 2020.
