Just as the third period of tonight’s Blackhawks versus Knights contest got underway, the Hawks announced a trade with the Florida Panthers.
After acquiring Aleksei Saarela from the Carolina Hurricanes as part of the Calvin de Haan for Anton Forsberg and Gustav Forsling trade over the summer, they have shipped the young forward out to the Sunshine State in exchange for defenseman Ian McCoshen. Here are a look at McCoshen’s career numbers so far:
As for the outgoing party, the 22-year-old Saarela has just one game of NHL experience, which came in last year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs. However, he did put together a couple of decent campaigns with the Charlotte Checkers over the past two seasons before tallying just one assist in five games for the Rockford IceHogs.
This move seems a bit puzzling on the surface given the defensive depth at Rockford and the Blackhawks not really knowing exactly what they had in Saarela. However, Connor Murphy has not been spotted on the Hawks bench so far in the third period tonight, so that may be a storyline to keep an eye on as far as the blue line goes.
