The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award is a prestigious honor that’s given to the nation’s top collegiate quarterback each year. Outstanding quarterbacks all across the NFL such as Deshaun Watson, Andrew Luck, and Matt Ryan have earned this distinction. Notre Dame’s Ian Book is a finalist for the award this season, but why?
The Notre Dame faithful is not pleased with a two-loss season. Of course, the blame can’t be placed solely on one player, but Ian Book has been a major factor in Notre Dame’s underachievement on the field. Ten quarterbacks qualify for the Johnny Unitas trophy, and Book’s stats aren’t exactly top-ten. He ranks 14th in passing touchdowns, 26th in yards, and 34th in completion percentage. All of these stats are strictly among seniors aside from quarterback rating, an area in which Book sits at 40th overall behind more than a handful of juniors and underclassmen. Book was expected to help lead the Irish back to the playoffs this season, and those numbers clearly have not been good enough.
Every Notre Dame fan wants to see Book and the rest of the Irish excel for the remainder of the year. But with how he has played thus far, Ian Book is certainly not a top-ten quarterback and it’s baffling to see him on this list.
