White Sox Reportedly Acquire Nomar Mazara

The White Sox seem to have found their 2020 right fielder.

The White Sox seem to have found their 2020 right fielder. Making their first move of the 2019 Winter Meetings, the team reportedly acquired Nomar Mazara from the Texas Rangers late Tuesday night.

Early unconfirmed reports indicate that the White Sox are sending Steele Walker to the Rangers.

In Mazara, the Sox are acquiring a former top prospect who is only 24 years old. Mazara came onto the scene as a 21-year-old in 2016, and he has manned right for the Rangers since then. Over that time, he has hit 20 home runs in three of his four seasons, and 19 in the other. His average is also very consistent, sitting at .261 over the past four seasons.

Mazara is sure to underwhelm some fans who were hoping the team would make noise by signing Nicholas Castellanos, or even the since proven false signing of Marcell Ozuna. His on-base numbers are underwhelming, and he is far from a Gold Glover. But the move seems to mark a vote of confidence in the young stable of corner outfielders at various levels of the minor leagues.

At only 24 with two years of team control left, the team could be hoping for a breakout season from the former top-100 prospect. Should Mazara fail to elevate from his current mold, he still represents a solid left-handed bat for the White Sox in right field, a position they were obviously laser-focused on filling this offseason.
