Is Kamaru Usman a Better Welterweight than GSP?

UFC 245 concluded in epic fashion with a super-fight showdown between Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman. The fight was dead-even until the fifth round when Usman managed the only two knockdowns of the entire bout. Covington went down and Usman pounced on him with a fury of punches, ending the fight by TKO with less than a minute to go.

This was arguably the biggest test of Usman’s career. This was arguably the fight of the year. This was a sincere undoing of everything Colby Covington took on in his “MAGA” character. A character in which, for anyone who saw him earlier in his career, is all he is at this point.

Despite being an American, when the crowd began chanting “USA, USA, USA” I couldn’t help but wish to see Covington get knocked out. His obnoxious demeanor was annoying to me, in-character or not, and I badly wanted Usman to shut him up.

Well, if we’re being honest here, Covington gave him the fight of a lifetime! That man came to brawl and, hot damn, can they both throw down. I think this fight proves that Covington is the real deal and that he doesn’t need his character to sell a fight anymore. I’d love to see him cool it with the character and get back into a championship challenge.

On the flip side, this was amazing resilience by Usman. Covington landed some serious shots, and Usman took them all like the champ he is. When he finally won it in that exciting fashion, it got me wondering:

Is Kamaru Usman a better WELTERWEIGHT than GSP was?

Now that’s a huge debate and I was a giant fan of GSP in his prime, so I’m not ready to say that just yet. However, if Uncle Dana gives us fans our wishes then we’ll get to see my guy Jorge Masvidal get a title shot. If Usman beats him, then it will be very difficult not to put him up there or higher than GSP.

Command guys… Honestly ? Seriously ? On GSP 11 wins streak 10 of them was against the #1 contender all for championship belt. At max, starting with Demia, i would say that Usman has 5 major fights against top contender… he beats Edwards, Maia, Dos Anjos, Woodley and Covington. Before that… was no names…
