After reports surfaced last week that the White Sox were signing former Cubs reliever Steve Cishek, the White Sox made it official today.

White Sox general manager Rick Hahn had this to say about Cishek:

“We believe Steve is a solid addition to our bullpen. He complements our other relievers well, provides a different look to opposing hitters later in games, and has consistently proven to be both durable and successful throughout his career.”

The sidewinding righty was the Cubs’ most reliable reliever the past two seasons by eating up 150 innings combined in 2018 and 2019. He posted a 2.18 ERA with a 192 ERA+ in 2018, and a 2.95 ERA with a 151 ERA+ in 2019.

On the other side of the spectrum, the White Sox designated right-handed pitcher Dylan Covey for assignment. Covey will go through waivers, and if he is not claimed by another team the White Sox would be able to keep him. Covey has spent his entire major league career with the White Sox, but with their transition from rebuild to contention, most White Sox fans knew it wouldn’t be long until Covey was off of the Major League roster.

Covey showed some potential in a game here or there, but the former first-round pick has accumulated a 6.54 ERA with the White Sox in 63 games. With the depth of pitching the South Siders finally have, White Sox fans have most likely will seen the last of Covey in a White Sox uniform that he is no longer occupying a spot the 40-man roster.

[…] Now a member of the White Sox, Cishek will continue his solid career in Chicago. Replacing an arm as reliable as his will be no easy task. […]

DFAing Covey is beyond sensible, it’s about time, how much more do they have to see. Carson Fulmer is awful, but he’s a #8 pick. I honestly dont know if anyone could ever say he didn’t get a shot.
