General manager Stan Bowman added a little help to his team’s blue line on Monday by claiming defenseman Nick Seeler off waivers from the division rival Minnesota Wild. Seeler appeared in just six games for the Wild this season before being placed on waivers.

Scrolling through the replies of Wild fans, seemingly every fan is upset with this decision by the Wild. Seeler was the odd man out in the Wild’s defensemen rotation. He’ll have the opportunity for quick revenge, as the Blackhawks face Minnesota Tuesday.

At just 26 years old, the physical, stay-at-home defenseman gives the Blackhawks another option on their thin blue line. With both Calvin de Haan and Brent Seabrook out for the season with injuries, depth on the back end is exactly what the team needed.

In 71 games with the Wild last season, Seeler registered two goals and five assists while holding a minus-four rating. While averaging 12:20 minutes per game, Seeler racked up 64 penalty minutes. Some of which came from throwing knuckles.

The Blackhawks have been playing quite well lately and find themselves just three points out of the last playoff spot in the Western Conference. Games will begin intensifying down the stretch. With Andrew Shaw also out due to injury, the Blackhawks could use a little grit on the ice. Seeler brings a chippy game where he likes to stir the pot a bit.

With Seeler joining the team, the Blackhawks now have eight defensemen on their active roster. One move that seems possible is sending Dennis Gilbert to the AHL to clear up some space for Seeler. With seven defensemen, Seeler would likely spot-fill in for the likes of Slater Koekkoek, Erik Gustafsson and Olli Maatta. Welcome to Chicago, Nick.

UPDATE: Defenseman Dennis Gilbert has been reassigned to the Rockford IceHogs.
