Ayo Dosunmu Suffers Knee Injury

Illini guard Ayo Dosunmu suffered a knee injury on the last play of the game against Michigan State last night.

Despite overcoming a massive early deficit, the Fighting Illini lost a 70-69 heartbreaker to Michigan State in Champaign last night. Unfortunately, that loss stings even more because of this play as the clock expired:

As shown above, Ayo Dosunmu slipped on the last play of the game while trying to drive for a game-winning bucket. He ended up twisting his knee in multiple different directions and had to be helped off the court. Now, I am not a doctor, but let’s hope this is not an ACL tear given the way he fell. Regardless, there are numerous other injuries that could be associated with the twisting of his knee.

All focus within Illini nation shifted from the game to the health of the star guard, as Illinois head coach Brad Underwood stated that “the game becomes secondary” when addressing the media afterward. No further updates have been announced regarding Dosunmu, but this article will be updated as soon as any information is available.

UPDATE (2/12/20, 4:08 PM CST): This afternoon, Ayo Dosunmu underwent an MRI which showed no structural damage to his leg. The standout sophomore guard took to Twitter to post an encouraging message after the MRI results were released.

There is still no timeline for Dosunmu’s return, but avoiding an ACL tear is great news for the Illini. This article will be updated again if there is further word on a timeline.

UPDATE (2/14/20, 10:30 AM): Illinois head coach Brad Underwood announced that Ayo Dosunmu is day-to-day and will travel with the team to Rutgers.
