Gambling is Cool, It’s Even Cooler When the First Legal Sports Bet in Illinois is on the White Sox
Sports betting is officially legal in the state of Illinois, and a local legend made the first historic wager.
2020 has been a year of firsts in Illinois. In January, Illinois residents got to try marijuana for the first time, and on Monday, Eddy Olcyzk became the first Illinois resident to ever place a wager on a sports team. Ok, that may be a stretch, but he was the first one to do so legally.
Eddy O was the perfect fit to place the first legal wager in Illinois. Its well known he is a horse racing enthusiast, and obviously an Illinois sporting legend. So what was Eddy’s first bet? $100 on the Chicago White Sox to win the American League Pennant.
At 16/1 odds, Eddy is looking at a roughly $1,700 payout should the White Sox head to the World Series for the first time since 2005. Beyond that, he’d instantly become an idol among the White Sox fan base as the man who foretold the teams glory with the first legal sports bet in Illinois history.
Eddy said he wanted to keep his first bet local, and liked the moves the team had made this off-season as the winter came and went.
As the old saying goes, Eddy was willing to put his money where his mouth is. With sports betting now officially legal in Illinois, Sox fans all over the state will now have the opportunity to do the same.
Here at On Tap Sports Net, we’ve always maintained that sports betting is cool and tough. However, it’s even cooler and even tougher when it’s legal, and when it’s on the Chicago White Sox to be playing in the World Series come October, it’s the coolest and toughest.
