March 10th marks another step forward in the White Sox exciting off-season with fire-baller Michael Kopech returning to competitive game action for the first time since his Tommy John surgery at the end of the 2018 season. Kopech, who is the #3 prospect in the White Sox system and #20 overall according to MLBPipeline, made a rain shortened, yet very promising debut in 2018 threw 14 innings before his surgery, and showed the Southside faithful his promise by striking out 15 batters and only walking 2 in his short cup of coffee in the big leagues.
The superstar prospect is well known for his upper 90’s fastball that he uses to overpower most hitters he faces, but with a refined slider and changeup, he looked ready to take the next step in his development in 2019. Since his TJ surgery, Kopech has been very public about working on his mental preparation and mental health and believes he is ready not just to make an impact on a big league roster, but to become more of a well-rounded pitcher than he has ever been in hopes to compete with teammate Luis Robert for Rookie of the Year honors.
Kopech and his fiancee, Riverdale star, Vanessa Morgan brought much needed star power to the team in 2018, but now with Yoan Moncada, Lucas Giolito, Tim Anderson, and Eloy Jimenez’s breakout seasons and the outside additions of Yasmani Grandal, Dallas Keuchel, and Edwin Encarnacion joining Jose Abreu, Kopech will eventually be added to a team that is itching for a chance at the postseason spotlight. Michael will likely start the year in Triple-A Charlotte, where the team can effectively monitor and control his innings to ease him into his workload.
You can watch Kopech’s start via the White Sox online stream or listen to it on WGN radio at 3:05 p.m. central time.
