The NHL officially suspended its season due to coronavirus concerns on Thursday, March 12th, and it’s a good thing they did so. Last night, Elliotte Friedman reported that an Ottawa Senators player has tested positive for COVID-19.

Flashback to last week: shortly after the Blackhawks defeated the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday, March 11th, the NBA announced a suspension of their season due to the coronavirus outbreak. This created a snowball effect that saw every other major professional sports league shut down their seasons the following day.

On Friday, March 13th, the Blackhawks were scheduled to host the Ottawa Senators, the only NHL team that now has a reported coronavirus case. If that game had been played, Blackhawks’ players, coaches, arena staff, and many more parties involved in hotel, travel, and gameday preparation logistics could have been exposed to the virus. Luckily, swift action by the league cut the season off before any contests could be played from March 12th onward. Hopefully the preventative measures that have been put in place will result in as few COVID-19 cases as possible.
