NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted today that the NFL playoffs will be expanded for the 2020 season. There will now be 14 teams in the playoffs, seven on each side. Before today’s vote, there were only 12, with six on each side.

With one new team from each conference being added to the mix, wild card weekend will now consist of three games on Saturday and three games on Sunday.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted an image that further explains the vote and how the playoffs will run going forward.

This expansion helps the Bears if the situation at quarterback doesn’t pan out. The Bears have shown that they can win games with a prolific defense and a lackluster offense and anything can happen when it comes to the NFL playoffs.

Best case scenario, whatever happens at the quarterback spot works and the Bears get a top seed. However, there are a lot of winnable games on the schedule. Of course, you have to account for those “unexpected” loses and those type of games make the decision on Nick Foles even more important. If Trubisky doesn’t pan out and he has to take Chicago into the playoffs? No chance. Well, flashback to his days in Philadelphia, Foles has shown he can get big wins in big games.

The expansion also adds more meaning to games played in the regular season as well. In years past, teams could finish second place in their division at 7-9. Now, teams that have seven to eight wins going into week’s 16 and 17 have a higher chance of getting into that last playoff spot. Essentially, the broadcasting networks shouldn’t even show the “in the hunt” graphic anymore because there could be half the conference going after that seventh seed. More meaningful football? 2020 has been a wild year so far. The NFL season will be that way as well. So far, players we never thought we’d see in different jerseys have moved, the effects of a likely limited offseason create speculation, and now the league throws in another playoff team? Where is the fast forward button to get to kickoff sooner?
