Beer Review: Florida Man – Cigar City Brewing

I’m traveling down to the Sunshine State for today’s beer review with a fairly familiar brewery. Most of you may know Cigar City from their Jai Alai IPA, which if you’ve never had, it is a very solid brew. Here’s a quick look at that one.
Browsing my local Arlington Heights Binny’s today, I spotted the bright blue can standing out like a beacon. One of my favorite things to do when I’m choosing what beer to drink for the night is to simply stroll down the aisle and see which design catches my eye. When one grabs my attention, I’ll then examine more closely what the beer is about. Yes, this can be time-consuming, sometimes walking back and forth down the same two aisles multiple times, taking up to 15 minutes. I wonder if the employers are on to me. This beer can may not seem like much at first, but the light blue design grabbed my attention. Then I noticed it’s a Cigar City beer, next I saw that it was a double IPA. See how this works? So I checked out the design a little more. Trailers on fire and an alligator is biting a beer can. It’s important to appreciate the little things and acknowledge the artwork that somebody worked hard on.
Now let’s get back on track here!
Florida Man pours a light amber color with an inch of dense white foam and a nice retention on the side of the glass. The smell is mostly pine and citrus. The taste of this one wasn’t exactly what I expected. It has that grassy, pine flavor but it was much sweeter than I thought it was going to be. The sweetness comes through on the front and then finishes with a piney, caramel taste on the back end. The mouthfeel is medium and the flavor really sticks in there. At 8.5% ABV and 80 IBUs, it is decently high in those respects but the sweetness of the beer balances it out so well. I really like this beer. It has that great combination of bitter and sweet that I love in a beer.
Now on this review, I wanted to do something a little different. For one of my favorite beers I wrote a review on, I convinced my wife to give it a try. I wanted to see what she had to say about it. Her reaction was priceless. Now, let me make one thing clear. She is absolutely not a beer drinker whatsoever. One thing she is, however, is a good sport. So with some of my reviews going forward, I would love to include her totally non-beer drinking palate to the equation. So here is me typing down exactly what she was saying as she tasted it:
“It smells like a fruit basket, like literally a basket of fruit.” As she makes a weird face.
“It tastes like a burning fruit sensation in my mouth. It’s burning the tip of my tongue. Why does this one taste so fruity?”
There you have it! All in all, she says this one really isn’t that bad. I don’t know what to say. I am in shock. My wife actually kind of liked a beer. You don’t know my wife, but if this doesn’t tell you about the balance of this beer then nothing will. Seriously, give this beer a try. I am sure I will be giving it several more tries. I rate this beer an 8.25 out of 10.
