Fantasy Impact: KJ Hamler Gives the Broncos Another Weapon

KJ Hamler represents big-play ability and the chance to put up good numbers, especially in PPR leagues, but he brings about significant risk.

KJ Hamler went to the Denver Broncos as the 46th pick of the 2020 NFL Draft. This marks the second wide receiver that the Broncos have drafted this year. Jerry Jeudy, their first-round pick, gets more fanfare, but KJ Hamler brings speed and explosive playmaking ability to the roster.

With Courtland Sutton and the aforementioned Jeudy starting on the outside, KJ Hamler might be confined to the slot. Hamler has the skills and quickness to do well out of the slot, but that does not mean he’ll be productive as a fantasy player. Furthermore, the Broncos could be looking to get 2019 first-round pick Noah Fant more involved in the passing game, which could take away targets especially since they both would operate out of the middle of the field.

Denver is trying to surround Drew Lock with athletic pass-catchers. But can the young quarterback get the ball to everyone consistently enough? He needs to make dramatic improvements to his game and it is very likely that he might rely on a few players, like Noah Fant, more than spreading the ball around.

KJ Hamler represents big-play ability and the chance to put up good numbers, especially in PPR leagues, but he brings about significant risk. Hamler should not be taken in most fantasy drafts, unless the league is very deep, but could be someone to consider as a streaming option throughout the season. There are just too many question marks. It does seem like Hamler will be more of the developmental receiver at first, whereas Jerry Jeudy will be more polished and better equipped to contribute right away.
