According to Tom Pelissero, the Bears have officially declined Mitchell Trubisky’s fifth-year option.

Trubisky joins a long list of first-round picks who were not given a fifth-year extension. Miles Garret is the only top-five pick from the 2017 NFL Draft to receive a fifth-year extension, and both quarterbacks selected after Trubisky — Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson — were also given their fifth-year options but only to buy both of their teams time to give them long-term extensions.

Mitchell Trubisky has had a bumpy road in Chicago, and this just makes it a little more difficult. This situation mirrors Kyle Fuller’s in 2017, and for lack of a better term, is telling Mitchell Trubisky it’s “shit or get off the pot” time. He needs to make something happen this year or the writing is on the wall for him.

When gauging most fans’ feelings for Trubisky, there isn’t that burning hatred for him like some felt for Jay Cutler. It’s been said time and time again, and most recently in “The Last Dance” documentary, but if you work hard and win this city will love you. Mitchell Trubisky has a likable attitude, and that’s even highlighted in the tweet, but Chicago desperately needs a productive quarterback. It can be argued that the quarterback drought goes over five decades and the stability level of fans and Chicago quarterbacks is frightening.

The last part of Tom Pelissero’s tweet is what people who still like Mitch fear most. We’ve all seen him make elite-level throws or do things well from time to time, but he just can’t seem to put it all together every week. If he somehow figures it out, a team will bite and pay him an obscene amount of money. If the Bears suffered through his painful years and he figures it out, it would be a perfect cherry topper to the Bears’ horrible conundrum.
