Illinois Football Hires First African American Woman: Ashton Washington
The University of Illinois makes a historic hire in their football program.
Per Jeremy Werner of 247 Sports, Asthon Washington will join Lovie Smith’s staff, as the new director of high school relations.
Growing up, Washington did not even like football but grew to like it over time. She recently worked in the XFL for the Houston Roughnecks in operations. Lovie Smith brings her in for an extra perspective on recruiting, after a bowl-eligible season. Coming from the Houston area, she will bring strong Texas ties to the Illini Football program. She is meant to be the “culture-changer” of the Illini organization to let other women and African American women follow suit. It’s great of the Illini to focus on the path forward towards a successful organization with an emphasis on diversity.
