In a not-so-surprising move today, Henry Cejudo has vacated the UFC Men’s Bantamweight Championship Title.

After his victory over Dominick Cruz at UFC 249, Cejudo announced his retirement from MMA and of course that meant his retained title would be up for grabs. Now the question remains, who will take over as the new champion?

Marlon Moraes (23-6-1) is the #1 ranked Bantamweight currently and has won four out of his last five fights; his only loss came at the hands of Cejudo. He is primed and ready for his chance at the title.

Aljamain Sterling (18-3) is the #2 ranked Bantamweight and is riding a four-fight win streak. His last loss was against none other than Moraes in 2017. His next fight is against the #4 ranked Bantamweight fighter, Cory Sandhagen, and is scheduled for the UFC 250 card on June 6. The winner of this match could easily be next in line for a bout against Moraes.

Petr Yan (14-1) is the #3 ranked Bantamweight with his only loss coming from the hands of Magomed Magomedov in 2016. He should most definitely not be forgotten in this equation. He’s a skilled, impressive fighter and it wouldn’t be surprising if he got a title shot.

In other news: the rumor mills were swirling today when it was speculated that Jorge Masvidal could seek out a rematch with Nate Diaz for the BMF belt after their previous match was cut short.

If this is in fact the case, Conor McGregor could be stepping up to take on Kamaru Usman for the Welterweight title.

This would not be the fairest move from the UFC. With all due respect to McGregor, Jorge Masvidal should be the next one to get his shot at a championship belt, even if he wants a rematch with Diaz first. He has worked hard and proven that he has what it takes to be a champion. Also, McGregor has only just recently returned to MMA. There are other fighters in the Welterweight division who could be in line for that shot as well such as Tyron Woodley or Leon Edwards.

Woodley is fighting Gilbert Burns on May 30 and Leon Edwards next fight is only said to be on “Fight Island”. There will no doubt be some interesting shake ups in these two divisions before this wild year of 2020 is over.
