Chicago Cubs president of business operations Crane Kenney said Marquee Sports Network and Comcast should have a carriage deal relatively ‘soon’ during an interview with 670 The Score Thursday.
Cubs fans remember when Tom Ricketts first mentioned Marquee at this year’s Cubs Convention, which followed with loud boos from fans who are upset with how the Cubs and Comcast have handled the process of getting the deal done.
That feels like a decade ago considering the pandemic we’re currently living in, but at this moment, the deal has yet to gain much ground. Fans finally got some clarity on the deal today when Kenney said negotiations have ‘picked up drastically’.
“I would expect we do reach an agreement with Comcast, in particular as we see the potential for some Spring Training games, potentially with the White Sox, coming even ahead of the July 23 or 24 Opening Day,” Kenney said. “The pace has picked up, and we’re optimistic we’ll get something done soon.”– Crane Kenney on the Cubs deal with Comcast
Kenney said a deal was close toward the beginning of March but the negotiations were slowed after the MLB season was in jeopardy.
Marquee can be seen on some providers in Chicago but Comcast is the largest provider. Kenney went on to say they hope the deal is made during the upcoming Spring Training. Players are to report July 1st.
