The White Sox opened Spring Training 2.0, or “Summer Camp” as it is being called around the league on July 3rd, and one major piece of the Sox rebuild was not present. Michael Kopech is currently not with his teammates at Guaranteed Rate Field as workouts begin.
The important part here is that Kopech is healthy. We currently do not know what the exact reason behind his absence is. It goes without saying that having a healthy Michael Kopech will be very important to the success of the White Sox this season. Hopefully, whatever Kopech is dealing with at this time will be resolved before games begin in late July.
Kopech, who was sidelined all of the 2019 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2018, returned to the mound in Spring Training and threw an inning for the White Sox before the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the rest of action in Arizona. His fastball clocking in at 100 mph and even hit 101 during that outing.
