Blackhawks forward Dominik Kubalik was one of the best rookies in the NHL during the 2019-20 season. Today, that was reaffirmed when Kubalik was named a finalist for the Calder Trophy, which is awarded to the league’s top rookie.
Kubalik led all rookies in goals with 30 and also added 16 assists over 68 games. Quinn Hughes of the Vancouver Canucks and Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche are the other finalists, making Kubalik the only forward of the group.
Hughes recorded eight goals and 45 assists over 68 games while Makar posted 12 goals and 38 assists in 57 contests. It will be interesting to see how the candidates are evaluated, as Kubalik provided much-needed scoring up front for the Blackhawks while Hughes and Makar made massive impacts both offensively and defensively from the back end for their respective clubs.
