The wait is finally over. The Chicago White Sox have called up highly-touted infield prospect Nick Madrigal from the Schaumberg taxi squad. As a corresponding move, the club designated RHP Kelvin Herrera for assignment.
Madrigal slashed .311/.337/.414 while recording 36 extra-base hits and 55 RBIs over 120 games between three levels of the White Sox farm system in 2019.
It’s no secret that the White Sox were playing the service time game with Madrigal given the time of the call-up. The former third overall draft pick will fill the positional need at second base, where utility men Leury Garcia and Danny Mendick have been keeping his spot warm.
Madrigal will play second base and bat ninth in his MLB debut tonight when White Sox visit the Kansas City Royals at 7:05 PM CT.
