According to Cubs’ manager David Ross, as reported by Jordan Bastian on Twitter, Tyler Chatwood will be activated off of the IL ahead of Tuesday’s game to start. Jose Quintana will also finally be activated off of the IL, however he will be inserted into the bullpen.
Based on the current state of the rotation, mostly Jon Lester and Alec Mills, the rotation could probably use Quintana in the rotation, even with the addition of a healthy Chatwood.
It will be interesting to see what happens with the rotation. It’s hard to argue that Quintana, given Mills’ track record of late, shouldn’t be in the rotation with Kyle Hendricks, Yu Darvish, Lester, and Chatwood. Quintana would certainly bring more consistency to the starting five.
That said, there is some intrigue with Quintana coming out of the bullpen, at least for now. Currently the Cubs only have Kyle Ryan as a lefty option in the pen, so having another lefty in the pen is appealing and, until Theo Epstein and company decide to promote either Burl Carraway or Brailyn Marquez, they will need another lefty to compliment Ryan.
Nonetheless, the Cubs seem to be confident in keeping Mills in the rotation with Chatwood, Lester, Hendricks and Darvish. However, if Mills’ struggles persist, don’t be surprised to see Quintana return to the rotation.
