BREAKING: Cubs Place SP Jose Quintana on 10-Day IL

The Chicago Cubs have placed starting pitcher Jose Quintana on the ten-day IL with left lat inflammation just days after he was activated from his first injury.

The Chicago Cubs have placed starting pitcher Jose Quintana on the ten-day IL with left lat inflammation.

This is not a good sign for Cubs’ starting pitching. Tyler Chatwood recently was also placed on the IL, meaning the Cubs are down to four starters in their rotation — Hendricks, Darvish, Lester, and Mills. Not only that, but the Cubs have a stretch of 13 games in 14 days coming up, so the Quintana blow is as big as ever considering he was going to assume Chatwood’s role in the rotation

Tony Andracki highlighted the situation pretty well on Twitter:

Quintana just returned from the IL last week and has given the Cubs length out of the bullpen while also emerging as rotation depth with Tyler Chatwood also on IL

Andracki’s followed up his tweet with the 13 games in 14 days information as well.

This will be a tough test for the Cubs’ pitching staff. The Cubs didn’t acquire any pitchers who could start at the deadline, so speculation suggests that Adbert Alzolay may finally see consistent time on the big league roster this season.
