After a short outing in last night’s game against the Twins, the White Sox have optioned RHP Reynaldo Lopez to the Schaumberg taxi squad.
Lopez has struggled in the shortened 2020 season to the tune of an 0-2 record, 8.38 ERA, and -0.5 bWAR in 9.2 innings over four games. The White Sox hoped that he could bounce back after returning from the injured list in late August, but it just wasn’t in the cards for the right-handed hurler. Even in his best outing against the Cubs on August 22nd, he only lasted 3.1 innings and Ricky Renteria used Gio Gonzalez as a “piggy-back” reliever to lighten the bullpen’s workload.
LHP Bernardo Flores Jr. will take Lopez’s spot on the White Sox active roster. Flores has not pitched in the big leagues before despite being the 29th man for a doubleheader in mid-August. During his four seasons in the White Sox farm system, he carries a 27-26 record and 3.18 ERA in 432.2 innings over 82 games.
